I was never big on celebrations or birthdays, and have been mindfully working on celebrating the little joys every day with gratitude. There’s a great book “Joy on Demand” by training the conscious mind to recognise these little moments.
I don’t want to make a whole song and dance about the whole thing, so I’ve baked myself a lemon yoghurt cake – a little dry, but the glaze salvaged it. I bought Sicilian lemons from Mercato by Giando and I think it makes a difference. While racing against countless deadlines, I’ve also lined up a week of catch ups and art events to nourish the mind and spirit.
I am so grateful to be alive after the whole cancer soap opera that continues. Everyone I met on this cancer journey is always waiting for the other shoe to drop. It’s inevitable to live with Damocles sword dangling over our heads all the time, but I suppose the only thing we can do is make the best out of NOW – celebrating the small things in daily life.
Well, chef took the dinner service off and we had an interesting dinner at UWE and several other tables got candles and cake – so I guess lots of people share my birthday! The wine list is incredible there, at amazing prices.
And there’s Smudge my tuxedo Beijing rescue in the background. It’s been nearly 10 years since I adopted Smudge and I am forever grateful to my cats who spark immense joy. Who knew I’d become a cat lady when I grew up with only dogs, and the occasional chicken.
