I love going back to Beijing, it always feels like my second home. Having spent 5 years living there, and the years my friends and I call “the years we grew into adults”. There, I made life long friends – many who now live across the globe, but we always remained in touch. It’s also where I met my husband.

Beijing also gifted me Smudge – the abused tuxedo street cat I took home 10 years ago and she’s travelled with me every relocation and has given me so much joy and support in life. She saw me through job changes, heartbreak and even cancer. She was returned to the shelter 4 times before I adopted her – because she was such a scaredy-cat and was never to be seen except at bedtime.

I love Beijing and even though it was a love-hate relationship when I lived there – like that first love ex-boyfriend you grew out of, but continue to have a soft spot for.

I really enjoyed writing this piece for Singapore’s national broadsheet The Straits Times.
